Abbie’s Patriot Ancestor has an interesting story. Conrad Crump came to America as a Hessian soldier in 1776. He was captured by the Americans at the Battle of Trenton that same year. He was traded back to the British in the prisoner exchange, marched with his company to Georgia where he deserted. He made his way north and joined the local militia in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was captured by the British at the siege of Charleston and marched to Long Island, NY where he remained in a prison camp for 12 months. His escape story is one out of a movie….He walked out the front door of the prison, dressed as a woman. After escaping Conrad made his way back to Mecklenburg County and then continued on to the backcountry of South Carolina where he fought in the ranks of General Francis Marion, aka The Swamp Fox, for the rest of the war.
Abbie’s State Project is supporting the Triad Flight of Honor organization, which honors veterans for their service and sacrifice. Each honor flight takes the veterans to the memorials in Washington, DC. Throughout the day, they are recognized and honored everywhere they go. The highlight is the welcome home celebration at the airport when they return. Hundreds of people attend, wave flags, say thank you, and there is so much patriotism! The next flight is scheduled for Wed, Sept. 27, 2023, at the Greensboro/PTI airport. Use the Pin Donation Form to make a contribution to Abbie’s project.
