Hey, y’all!
I am Bethany Westbrook, and I am the 2022-2023 North Carolina Society Children of the American Revolution State President!
This year, my State Theme is All-Terrain Veterans, and throughout the year we’ll be learning to notice and raise awareness of accessibility issues across our state. There are many painstakingly overlooked places with accessibility issues including parks, churches, schools, and restaurants. Despite laws that require public places to be accessible for all people, many places only provide the bare minimum—if that—for people who have disabilities. During the year, members will be charged with taking notice of these places and learning to recognize what makes a place inaccessible. We will not stop with observance though! Members will also work to raise awareness of these issues amongst their families, friends, schoolmates and teachers, church leaders, and even their local and/or state government.
My State Project is to raise $16,000 to purchase an All-Terrain Track Wheelchair for a Veteran who has a disability. We will be partnering with The Independence Fund, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in Charlotte, and they will ensure that the chair goes to a Veteran who is truly in need of the chair. I first learned about All-Terrain Track Wheelchairs from my cousin who is recently quadriplegic. He told me about how these motorized wheelchairs with their tank-like “wheels” provide access for people who have disabilities to all terrains including those which are unsafe for other wheelchairs such as sand, gravel, soft ground, loosely-packed dirt, and snow. Through my project, we will be able to provide a Veteran with both an All-Terrain Track Chair as well as access to all terrains!
I am excited for this year for the North Carolina Children of the American Revolution to provide All Terrains to a Veteran!
