Hello North Carolina C.A.R. members
What a quick few weeks it has been since State Conference. I attended my first National Convention in Arlington, VA where I was installed as your State President. I returned home just in time to attend the Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference and bring greetings. I had just enough time to do some last minute studying for my exams and then I returned home to start a busy, busy summer!
Since my return home from college, I brought greetings to the David Williams DAR Chapter in Goldsboro on May 16th and spoke with them about my project and the importance of membership in the C.A.R. On May 20th, I participated in the wreath laying ceremony at the Alamance Patriot Day in Burlington, sponsored by the SAR. On May 26th, I participated in the Vietnam Veterans Commemoration in Morehead City, sponsored by the Otway Burns DAR Chapter.
I encourage everyone to attend the Southeastern Regional Meeting. Our own Mary Lee Howell is the National Vice President of the Southeastern Region. The meeting will be held in Huntsville, Alabama on June 22-23, and we will be visiting the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. It should be an out of this world time!
The theme for this year is “Common Threads in a Shared Tapestry.” The threads are our Revolutionary War patriots, membership in the C.A.R., and a love of American history. The tapestry is made up of those threads…and what a beautiful tapestry it is. My project is to support the Museum of the Southeast American Indian by purchasing and filling backpacks which will be used to enhance the experience for visitors to the museum. These backpacks will be filled with an electronic tablet, a coloring book and crayons, and other items to help tell the story of the Lumbee Indians.
Summer Board will be on August 12th on the campus of UNC- Pembroke in Pembroke, NC. We will tour the museum and learn more about our National President’s Project “Browsing History” which involves the electronic capture of the papers of the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe.
Thank you to all the members who have agreed to be Chairmen of our State Society’s committees. I am looking forward to working with you and with your State Officers. If I don’t see you in Huntsville, I will look forward to seeing you in Pembroke.
In C.A.R. Friendship,
Megan Benedict, State President
