Emma Price Hughes, Debutante, March 2015

Miss Emma Price Hughes is a member of the Joel Lane Society in Raleigh. She currently serves as State History Chairman. Emma recently participated in her 1st Winter Board Meeting & this is her 1st State Conference. Emma would like to honor the service of her great-grandmother Christine Vester Price & her grandmother, Dr. Diane Price Fleming who held memberships in the Micajah Pettaway DAR Chapter in Rocky Mount. Dr. Fleming served NC Society C.A.R. as a Senior Recording Secretary. The vintage gown Emma is wearing this evening was originally handmade by her great-grandmother for her grandmother’s wedding in 1961. It was also worn by her mother Susannah for her debut in 1983 & her wedding in 1993. Of very special note The Robert B. Fleming Scholarship was founded in memory of Emma’s late uncle who was a past president of the Joel Lane Society & state Librarian. Miss Price is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Patrick Hughes of Raleigh.

Miss Hughes is a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. She is a member of the National Honor Society & volunteers as a tutor. She serves as Retreat Leader, is on the Spiritual Life Leadership Council & Principal Leadership Council. Emma has received 2 Gold Keys, 1 Silver Key & several Honorable Mentions for the Eastern Central NC Scholastic Art Competition. She received 1st Place in the State for the Math Teachers’ Logo Design Competition. Emma played AAUW basketball for years & was a member of the Cardinal Gibbons High School Girls’ basketball team. She has enjoyed summer swim team since age nine & has served as a lifeguard for past 2 years. Emma has been accepted at NC State, ECU & Meredith College where she has been named a Merit Scholar & Teaching Fellow. She will study elementary education at one of these schools this fall.

Emma would like to honor her Revolutionary Ancestor Lieutenant Thomas Mann from Nash County. Lieutenant Mann served for 3 years in Capt. Tilman Dixon’s Company of 1st NC Battalion, commanded by Col. Thomas Clark.

Emma is being presented by her parents Michael & Susannah Hughes. Susannah is a past state President of NC Society C.A.R. & a past president of the Joel Lane Society. The Assistant Marshal for Emma is Andrew John Whiteley of Raleigh.
