Shannon and Emily Booker, Debutantes, March 2009

This year we are honored to have two sisters being presented. The young ladies are members of the Joel Lane Society in Raleigh. They are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Booker of Apex. Their Mother Katherine was presented as a Debutante when she member of the Joel Lane Society, who is now a member of the Caswell-Nash Chapter DAR.

Miss Shannon Booker as served C.A.R. on the State level as American Heritage Program Chair; C.A.R./DAR/SAR/SR Relations Chair and Mountain Schools chair. She has held several positions within her local society and has taken part in wreath laying ceremonies.

Shannon is a current Junior at UNC-Chapel Hill where she a pre-Med student in the biology/pre-med Honors program. She has been placed on the Dean’s least every semester. Shannon has conducted and presented undergraduate Research in the Biology Department. She is a National Merit Scholar, Watson Scholar, Robert Byrd Scholar, AP Scholar with Honors and a National Honor Society member. Her studies also garnered 2 National Latin awards, 2 Mustang Leadership Awards and a Distinguished Service Award. She was the Choral Council Chairman, Lettered in Volleyball and Chorus. Shannon sang in an award-winning Barbershop Quartet, in the All-County Chorus and the Honors Choral Ensemble. Her academics led her to researching on Sea oats at the North Carolina Summer Venture in Science Program. She also had the opportunity to study Shakespeare’s plays in London and Oxford last summer. Shannon is an officer in Circle K, which is an international service organization and coordinates the campus–wide “Books for Africa” drive and is team captain for the organization’s Relay for Life team. She also volunteers in one of the area’s nursing homes.

Shannon would like to honor her Revolutionary Ancestor Captain Cato Riddle. Captain Riddle fought in the battles of Guilford Courthouse and Cowpens.

Miss Emily Booker is currently the State American Indian Program Chairman and has served on the state level as Conservation Chair, Membership Chair and Kids Helping Kids. She has served in several positions and has taken part in wreath layings with her society.

Emily is a senior at Middle Creek High School in Apex where she is an AP Scholar, Honor Roll student and a member of the National Honor Society. She is captain of the varsity Basketball Team, & All-Conference & All-Academic Conference player. Last year, she was leading scorer & rebounder and one of the top players in the Triangle. She is also an All-Conference & All-Academic Volleyball Player, named MVP last year. Emily is the lead student accompanist for the Honors Coral Ensemble, & was selected for All-County Chorus. Last spring she sang in a concert at the United Nations in New York. Emily is on the Choral Council and acts in musical theater. In addition to private piano study, she is active in the youth & music programs of St. Francis United Methodist Church. She has lettered in Basketball, volleyball and chorus.  Emily plans on attending UNC-Chapel hill in the fall.
